The smiling face, the happy girl who never said anything bad about anyone, her cheerful nature that could brighten anyone's day. They were all just a mask. A mask she wore to hid what she was truly feeling. To hide the pain she had suffered because of what others had done to her. The sadness bottled close to her heart that never seemed to leave no matter how much she tried to pretend that it wasn't there. Finally, the anger she had for herself and others that she did not know how to express because she was afraid what would happen if she did. So many layers of masks she had applied to herself that even she began to wonder if she truly knew who she was.
There was one person, one solitary person in her life that could peel back the layers and find the girl hidden beneath them. The problem was she didn't know if she could trust him or not with that girl. Just as she had her layer of masks he had his own and unlike him, she never seemed able to get past them. His words of comfort, his gentle touch, where they really real or where they just another mask, one of many he had? Her mind kept telling her to stay away from him that he was nothing but trouble waiting to happen. That he would sooner or later leave her alone and that the girl he had found would be lost forever.
Her heart, however, had different ideas. It told her to trust him, that slowly just like he was healing her that she could heal him. All she had to do was stay by his side no matter what happened and someday the man she loved would remove those masks of his on his own. She just had to be patient and understanding after all the multiple scars on his body that she would glance once in awhile proved he had gone through much more troubling things than she herself had. In her eyes, it was a miracle that he was capable of loving someone at all after what he must have gone through.
So right now she was faced with a choice; to follow what the more sensible part of her wanted to do or to follow her heart, something she had not done in a long time. He held his hand out to her and smiled gently at her and she hesitated only a moment before placing her hand in his. She would put her faith in him and follow what her heart desired since she was so tired of listening to what her mind had told her to do. After all, it's what got her into this situation with the masks in the first place...
