Masks: Vanquished

When she had arrived at home she had not expected to see her husband pacing in their living room trying to wear a hole in their hardwood floor. She knew the signs of a panic attack and clearly, he was having one. She set her things down and walked up to him taking his hands in hers mainly to stop him from twisting his wedding band around his finger. It had become a telltale sign of distress for him not long after they had gotten married. “Honey, what's wrong?” she asked him noting he was looking down.
His focus was currently on her stomach where their baby was currently growing. She wasn’t showing just yet, but she had told him almost as soon as she had found out herself.  “What if I’m like him?” he asked.

“You are wonderful around kids. None of your kindergarten students want to go home when the day is finished. You are not at all like him,” she told him as she smiled softly. She wouldn’t have married him if he was even remotely like his father.

“He was like that! Nice outside of the house, but a bastard at home!” She sighed knowing no matter how much she tried to reassure him at the moment he would just find some counterargument. She couldn’t blame him for worrying as even she was afraid she would turn out like her own mother. It was known to happen to once someone who suffered from a form of abuse growing up.

“Let's make a deal, if you hurt our child intently I will punch you as hard as I can and file for divorce the very same day or if I begin to act like my mother you slap me as hard as you can and file for divorce the same day… Deal?” she asked him. If she ever did become like her mother she never wanted him to go through the same type of life her father had.

“Deal, but what happens if we are the best parents in the world?” he asked her a small smile on his face as he looked up at her now. Maybe he hadn’t been panicking as bad as she had initially thought?
“Then we reward ourselves and calmly discuss having another one.” He grinned then before he leaned in to kiss her.

“Sounds like a plan to me.”

“We may need a bigger house though…” she told him her tone one of caution though the playful smile said she was not serious about it.

“Who cares? I’m going to be a father,” he told her and she couldn’t help as her smile turned into a grin as well. Then she leaned forward and rested her forehead against his her eyes closed.

“I love you,” she whispered to him as she felt him wrap his arms loosely around her waist.

“I love you too…”

They had found each other and had stuck with each other despite the problems the other had. Through their love, kindness, and patients they had saved and healed one another. The two will face troubles in the future, but they will face them together for they are no longer alone.

The End
